An ALIE Project from United Kingdom in Authentic Learning:
GIFTED AND TALENTED STUDENTS
CONTEXT
In commen with many other Euroean countries, the UK is experiencing decreasing numbers of students in certain sectors of land based education, especially agriculture (farming) and countryside management (environmental studies). We need to promote land based education and the land based industries as a real and interesting career path for young people.
Therefore, the UK ALIE team at hte Cunnington Centre for Land based Studies, Bridgwater College decided to work with what we hope will be our 'future students' by collaborating with a local Secondary School, to provide an authentic programme in the college which would complement the students' science learning in school.
AIMS: To encourage high level students to consider land based education as a real option at Level 3, as an alternative to the more academic 'A' level route.
HOW: We approached a local Secondary School and discussed the best group to work with. They suggested that such a programme would be ideal for their 'gifted and talented' science students (i.e. students who display high aptitude and interest in this subject). Accordingly, we decided to work together with the school to develop a programme for the last two years to compulsory (Secondary) school, using the ALIE methods and the College's extensive and real-life resources.
