@MrFakeland CRTs are not radioactive. Monochrome CRTs operate below 10 kilovolts, and so the highest energy photons are in the "soft X-ray" range. Lead shielding is not necessary. They are no gamma rays. There is no "shit" surrounding it -- color CRTs operate at 20-30KV and can produce hard X-rays, and require lead shielding which is incorporated directly into the glass envelope.

That is so brilliant! my congratulations! i will feature it in my site. thanks.

@bkraz333 the cathode is coated with a mixture of barium, strontium and calcium oxide. when the tube is assembled the cathode is coated with barium, strontium and calcium carbonate, during evacuation the cathode is heated to decompose the carbonates into oxides and CO2. the CO2 is then also pumped out

Best explanation!

Realy great video! Many thanks!

@bkraz333 also, did you forget to mention the grid electrode or there isnt a control grid in a scope CRT at all?

@MrFakeland please, prove your point, show us evidence

Great vid, thanks
so if you broke a vacuum tube, and you pump all the air back out then seal it. will it work again?

@260830107 The main problem is that the cathode will be permanently poisoned by oxygen exposure. I suspect the tube will somewhat work after evacuation, but the dot will not be as bright -- it could be quite dim.

@bkraz333
Interesting. Did they have to assemle it in an inert athmosphere? Or did they use a trick to boil off the contaminated cathode surface?
conoba 1 month ago
@conoba I am not sure. I suspect the coating on the cathode starts life as a mixture of materials that are stable in an oxygen environment. The mixture is applied to the cathode, then the tube is evacuated. The first time the cathode is heated, the mixture forms a metal oxide that is oxygen-sensitive.

How long do the heater(filament's) last in open air?
quicknuclearscience 7 months ago
@quicknuclearscience I am not sure. I suspect after exposing a metal oxide cathode to atmosphere, it may still work when put back into a vacuum, but it will emit many fewer electrons than when fresh. Search for "oxygen poisoning" and metal oxide cathodes.
