On the iPhone 4S launch date just a couple of weeks ago, we broke the news that developer Steven Troughton-Smith had successfully ported the Siri user-interface and some of the underlying code from the iPhone 4S onto the iPhone 4. The port was functional except for the most important part: talking to Apple's servers. Now, Troughton-Smith has followed up with Chpwn to get the server fully working on an iPhone 4 and iPod touch.

Troughton-Smith exclusively provided 9to5Mac with the above high-quality video that shows Siri fully working on an iPhone 4. The video not only shows the Siri functionality on an iPhone 4, but is in depth and shows a side-to-side comparison against its newer, faster sibling, the iPhone 4S. Neben dem Dual-Core A5-Chip, der verbesserten 8MP Kamera gehört die Siri-Sprachsteuerung zweifelsfrei zu den Highlights des iPhone 4S. Als Alleinstellungsmerkmal des Gerätes ist Siri sogar die neue Hauptfunktion des neuen Apple Smartphones. "Alleinstellungsmerkmal beim iPhone 4S" ist schon das richtige Stichwort. Schnell stellt sich natürlich die Frage, warum Apple die Siri Sprachsteuerung nicht auch auf anderen iOS-Geräten bereitstellt. Die fehlende Leistung (A5-Chip) kann sicherlich nicht als Antwort geltend gemacht werden, immerhin verfügt auch das iPad 2 über die A5-CPU, Siri steht allerdings nichts zu Verfügung.

Bereits vor wenigen Tagen haben wir uns dem Siri Transport auf das iPhone 4, den iPod touch, iPad 2 und iPad 1 gewidmet, zweifelsfrei besteht bei zahlreichen Nutzern anderer iOS-Geräte der Wunsch, die Siri Sprachsteuerung auch auf ihren Geräten zu nutzen. Von offizieller Seite wird es dies vermutlich nie geben. Der Weg führt somit nur über einen Jailbreak. Doch dieser Weg schien schwerer als gedacht, da die Apple Server hauptverantwortlich für Siri sind und selbige nur Anfragen des iPhone 4S zulassen.

Das reine Installieren des Siri User-Interface auf das iPhone 4 war noch recht einfach, das Problem lag vielmehr in der Kommunikation mit den Apple Servern. Doch nun scheint der Durchbruch geschafft und Siri konnte auf dem iPhone 4 und auf dem iPod touch "ans Laufen gebracht werden". Das erste eingebundene Video zeigt die Siri Sprachsteuerung auf dem iPhone 4 im Vergleich zu Siri auf dem iPhone 4S. Um die Siri Portierung auf das iPhone 4 und den iPod touch zu ermöglichen, war ein iPhone 4S Jailbreak erforderlich, die notwendigen Daten mussten dem iPhone 4S entnommen und den anderen iOS-Geräten eingepflanzt werden. Wie der für den Siri Transport zuständige Entwickler Steven Troughton-Smith in einem Interview mit 9to5Mac angab, sei er nicht an einem kommerziellen Vertrieb oder der Bereitstellung seiner Lösung via Cydia interessiert, vielmehr habe er Interesse an der Technik hinter Siri.
