David picks up on the assumption that everything is quicker and easier to sort out by text. Is sending bite-sized messages really that effective? Or is it just a small pointless chore?

ABOUT DAVID MITCHELL'S SOAPBOX:

I catch myself nodding along to rants like this and then thinking "Jesus, I'm getting old.." I'm 27, ffs :P I shouldn't be nostalgic about answering the house phone lol

I've been having the same reaction to watching Grumpy Old Men and Grumpy Old Women since I was about 17.

Don't be hard on yourself; I'm 16 and in the exact same place. (but I don't think I'm old).

Actually making a phone call was considered something extremely intrusive from the very start, I can't find the quote from the very old-timey guy that said it back when the telephone was introduced but Stephen Fry told exactly the same thing anyway

"It’s like going, [banging rhythmically on desk] “Speak to me now, speak to me now!” If you went into someone’s office and banged on their desk and said, “I will make a noise until you speak to me,” it would be considered unbelievably rude"

David Mitchell thinks just like me, but is a more articulate and intelligent version of myself.

Good to see that David agrees with me on this. I almost always prefer to talk over the phone to texting. It's less of a chore and faster/more effiicient. And also more pleasant, as long as it's a friend and not a grandmother, for instance (not that talking to my grandparents is unpleasant, it can just.. take a while).

Well, actually I don't really love talking over the phone too much either. Which is why most of my phone calls amount to "meet you up at X" or "talk to you later". Hmm.

I have a land line, and friends, family, and such are in AWE that I still have one. I just prefer a home phone to a shitty cell phone that drops calls, and is unable to find a signal when I really need it. I use a cell phone for emergencies, and am not a text person. A 30 second call is much simpler that trying to type out information on a more advanced telegraph. Unless it is something being sent to 2 or more people, an address, time ect. want a response? Call me! Getting old, Get off my lawn!

    Yeah, that background is...creepy.

Kind of reminds me of Colbert playing the role of a teacher in "Strangers with Candy", deep frying loads of food in his classroom.

Calling someone is like showing up at their door, knocking, expecting a chat. Texting is like leaving them a note slipped under the door. eMailing is like, well, mailing a letter.
