Greg Mello, Executive Director of the Los Alamos Study Group, speaking at a public meeting in Taos on June 4, 2009 describes and explains a secretive plan put forward by some non-governmental organizations (NGOs), including one New Mexico organization, Nuclear Watch of New Mexico. This plan, apparently masterminded by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), hopes to consolidate and move nuclear weapons facilities and operations from the eight active sites around the country as much as possible into three sites - Los Alamos National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque and the Pantex Nuclear Weapons Plant east of Amarillo, TX. This plan and related lobbying and litigation was put into action two or more years ago without any public participation or discussion in the targeted regions.
