You have the ingredients right ( although too much tomato puree) but totally off on the cooking method. Cook onions till tender, add the chicken pieces, saute for a bit, add ginger/garlic and spices, fry a bit more, add the tomatos, fresh is best. Cover for a bit to soften them up , add the yogurt mixture and stir fry till oil glistens on the surface of the gravey. Garnish with ginger slices. green chillies halved and chopped cilantro. Lower heat and cook for another 5 minutes. Voila!
