Banded kraits are pretty cool. They'll eat any snake that will fit in their stomach, and that means they can eat snakes even bigger than (longer than) they are. This one at a red-tailed racer that was longer than it by 20 inches. It also has eaten the wicked Malayan Pit Viper and some other vipers and tree snakes.

These native to Thailand snakes are relatively harmless during the day. Apparently nobody has them on record as biting anyone during the day. So, handlers just free-handle them if it's daylight. Not me though! No thanks...

Banded kraits are one of the top killers in Thailand because they move around at night - on the ground and many Thais sleep outside or in homes without doors - and they roll over on a krait, get bitten, and die - sometimes without even knowing a krait bit them.

The venom is neurotoxic and affects the muscles of the body because nerve impulses to control the muscles are shut off.

A person usually would die soon after the diaphragm muscle stopped - if no ventilator is available.

One of the most famous herpetologists in the world was bitten on 9/11/04 in Burma on an expedition by a many-banded krait (Bungarus multicinctus multicintus I think is the specific name). The krait was about 10 inches long and thin as a pencil. It bit down for about 10 seconds, but there was no blood on the finger of the guy - he thought, maybe OK. No... he died about 30 hours later. Others on the trip had to start breathing for him after about 5 hours.

Krait venom is wicked-toxic and I've no desire to pick this snake up. I couldn't help touching it though. See me flinch immediately when it moved?

  • ...his hand to my arm, pumping, as it seemed to have been doing so for long, as my reflexes and reaction first saw it in my arm, then recconed the whip alike attack, in my mind and eye, so much faster than human awareness, still , as I saw it`s eyes it made me think,"like a shark, dead eyes"realizing that I could die I took it around"the throat",sqeezed so hard, then ripped it off, angled it, as it had it`s mouth open, then hit it on the the head to kill it,full force, dropped it,yet it lived,

  • @pasiorha HOLY SHIT. I don't usually swear or let others swear in the comments, but HOLY SHI* that was an amazing story. Would you either want to write that up as a longer description so I could put it at ThailandSnakes (com) or would you mind if I copied your comments here and posted an article about this there? Amazing... thanks for telling it here.

  • I got bitten by a banded krait 1995 in Bangkok, and it was during the night,

The effects of a such bite were far worse than I could have imagined, as I ended up in hospital and after a week or so, when I was about to leave the hospital, the doctor told me it would take around 5 years to recover, and it did,at least.besides the harm it did to my physical condition; it kept breaking my mental wellbeeing into constant submerge,it`s became a turning point that I ,16 years after, find not worth it

  • @pasiorha you did? How did you get bitten? Where were you - outside? Or, did you keep it as a pet? Details please...

The snakeman invited me to come up on stage(suppose he didn`t expect me to) He took it in the tail and swept it from side to side towards me,as the snake got aggressive and attempted to charge, but thedistance kept me safe until it pulled it self up and stroke like awhip, and hit me,while the people in the bar got all exited, standing roaring,as it reached from
