A scene from Alfred Hitchcock's Blackmail (1929), currently being restored by the BFI, with new original score by British composer Neil Brand.
Don't miss the screening of this film on 31 Oct in the Barbican Hall, with live accompaniment by BBC Symphony Orchestra. Introduced on-stage by film critic and broadcaster Mark Kermode.

I think the man in this scene is Cyril Ritchard, who had a very distinguished career in British cinema and theater. Did some great work for the Yanks, too.

The French Cinémathèque in Paris is showing all Hitchcock movies in January and February, it is a divine treat. I have seen The Lodger and the sound version of Blackmail. Great film. Incredible scene where Anny Ondra just hears the word "knife" when the gossip lady talks about the murder, until a final strong "KNIFE!" that makes Ondra scream. Avant-garde use of sound. And those scenes in the British Museum. Anny Ondra is quite impressive in this scene, especially after the murder.

It was a great night, and fantastic to see this classic film with a score that really does it justice; thank you Barbican, BBCSO, and Neil Brand.....can we make this the first of a new era of silent film screenings with live orchestral scores???
