Betty Grable appears with Joe Penner in this scene from RKO's well-reviewed but rarely seen 1939 racetrack comedy, "The Day the Bookies Wept." Penner plays Ernie Ambrose, a Brooklyn cab driver (and pigeon trainer) who has no interest in playing the ponies. Grable portrays his long-suffering girlfriend, Ina Firpo. • Now I know where Mel Brooks got his idea for Franz Liebkind's pigeons!

  • Brooks must have seen a few Penner films. The main plotline for "The Producers" came right out of "New Faces of 1937," which starred Penner, Parkyakarkus and Milton Berle.

  • That's fascinating...Glad to see some Penner videos here. A hugely underrated comedian. I love Joe Besser too!

I'll bet the pigeons were animated at Disney, as they were connected to R-K-O at the time.
