A legendary, near-mythical song, the creation of which was probably tied in with the religious awakening he experienced during the mid-1970s (albeit not an awakening of the Christian variety).

The great man has always been reluctant to discuss it, but - as always - his guitar speaks volumes. Stunning.

  • Note perfect from top to bottom. No other version of the song approaches this.

  • @royemembury It is off RT The Life and Music of Richard Thompson (Disc 3 Shine in the Dark). See the Wikipedia article for more information.

  • I saw the band on this tour - I think it may have been the night before this, October 16 if memory serves at the First Avenue in Minneapolis. Seeing him,Collister and Gregson doing this song was the salient moment of a stunning - the best of many RT concerts I've seen.

  • Not .

  • I'm not sure but is this not the version from Guitar Vocal??? (realesed in 1976??)

  • @pattipie100 We'll have you with a Scots accent yet. Surprised you liked this one pretty dark technical stuff.

  • @yellowshark2006 The watching the dark / doom and gloom from the tomb version can be found on youtube uploaded by 'blokebroadcasting' (can't get a link to post)

  • @WatTyler13 The version on Watching the Dark is totally different from the one on Guitar, Vocal, and is the greatest guitar solo that I have ever heard. Its originally from gloom and doom from the tomb, vol 1.
