Slade are an English rock band. The British Hit Singles & Albums stated they were the top UK group of the 1970s. They were the first act to have three singles enter at #1, and all six of the Wolverhampton band's chart-topping stompers were penned by Noddy Holder and Jim Lea. Total UK sales were 6,520,171, and their best selling single, "Merry Xmas Everybody", sold more than 1 million copies worldwide.

The group dominated the UK charts during the early 1970s. During the height of their success, Slade out-performed their chart rivals, such as Wizzard, Sweet, T. Rex, Suzi Quatro, Mud, Smokie, Gary Glitter, Roxy Music and David Bowie. In the UK, they achieved twelve Top 5 hit singles from 1971 to 1974, six of which topped the chart. In total, Slade had seventeen Top 20 hits between 1971 and 1976 including six #1s, three #2s and two #3s. No other UK act of the period enjoyed such consistency in the UK Top 40 and Slade actually came the closest to matching The Beatles' twenty two Top 10 records in a single decade (1960s). Three of their singles entered the charts at #1 and they sold more singles in the UK than any other group of the 1970s.

In August 1980, Ozzy Osbourne, during his Blizzard of Ozz tour, cancelled his set at the Reading Festival at short notice. Slade, who had all but disbanded, were recommended to replace them. A demoralised Hill had effectively left the band, and initially refused to do the show when asked by the other band members, but Chandler convinced Hill to play what could well have been their last live show. To Hill's astonishment, the band stole the festival (highlights of their performance were also broadcast on BBC Radio 1's Friday Rock Show Reading special), and quickly became darlings of the music press.

A new run of chart success followed, though not on the large scale of their 1970s heights. In 1981, "We'll Bring the House Down" reached #10 in the UK, and an album of the same name got to #25. This was followed by another chart hit "Lock Up Your Daughters", and they had two further UK Top 10 hits with "My Oh My" (#2) and "Run Runaway" (#7). The latter two singles also reached the US Top 40, with "Run Runaway" peaking at #20.

Powell and Hill formed Slade II with three other musicians after the departure of Holder and Lea. The suggestion to call the group Slade II came from Holder. The group name was once again shortened to Slade after a period, and over the years a number of new members have come and gone with only Hill and Powell remaining constant throughout. The group work solidly on the UK theatre circuit in the winter months, and throughout Europe during the rest of the year. They have released one album, which has been retitled a number of times and also a few singles in Europe.

  • Sounds like Queen?? Which Queen track??

  • @gypsyroadhog Every song on the FLASH GORDON soundtrack ....

  • @anonymousent NOT AGREED BTW QUEEN SCROUNGED OFF SLADE MORE THAN THE OTHER WAY AROUND. ASK BRIAN MAY HE WILL MENTION SLADE AS ONE OF THE BIGGEST INFLUENCES.

  • @proslade Yes ... that is EXACTLY what i meant when i put " Sounds Like Queen " - meaning they had to get their influence from Slade ... but everyone took the comment the other way around & ran away with it ... : / ... oh well ....

  • @anonymousent Yes, I think Queen have to thank Slade more than the other way around.

But the MAIN point to me is, that if you listen to the intro of this, it is just SUPURB quality, the first 55 seconds are a complete soundtrack. I think Slade were better "tune" producers than Queen. Sales succes doesn t say anything about the talent s band. I simply think Slade were a countrymile better. Not that Queen would be that bad though!

  • @proslade AGREED .... i think that if they were on a different label ( with the power wallets backing them ) when they came out they would have been 10 times bigger .... but u right / record sales dont say shit about how good a band is ...

  • Slade was, is and always will be one of the most talented bands of UK history, they incluenced practically every major act of the time.Kiss bassist Gene Simmons admitted his songwriting and stage performance was influenced by Slade. Cheap Trick said that they went to see Slade perform, they used "every cheap trick in the book", thus coining thier name. Quiet Riot had US hits with their covers. ACDC and even Bon Jovi have mentioned them as influences. Rock legends around the planet love em. Rock

  • Haha You're right on that, Slade did write the song, along with Mama Weer all Craze Now, another one that QR covered.

But there is a difference between QR and Slade, it takes real talent to write the songs that you have hits with, but as far as taking hits and making them again, well hell, any band can do that.

And the other BIG difference is Kevin (rip) could never hold a candle to Noddy as far as lead singers go. Noddy Holder is simply in a class all by himself.

  • Is this extended mix available to buy on a regular CD?

  • @anonymousent Sounds like Big Country to me. Big Country was much darker though. Same whaling bagpipe sounding guitars. This song and BC's debut album came out at nearly the same time.

  • I listen to a lot of music, a very wide variety. But this is the best intro of all, it's magic.

  • HOLI CHIT I JUST BROKE MEH HEADFONES!!, AN MEH EARDRUMS!!

  • It Doesnt sound like Queen at all !.......it sounds like Slade !

  • been a slade fan for about 38 years still think they rock and this is on my mp3 along with 80 other slade tracks listen to them everyday just wish original band would reform we really need a band like slade in the charts so much crap now ,(why does everyone listen to this rap hip hop crap now) we need some rocking back in the charts,,but thank you slade for giving us the best music than x

  • I'd be willing to bet that Bob Geldof, intentionally or accidentally, used this song as the basis for "The Great Song Of Indifference". Listen to them back-to-back sometime...

  • Anyone care to guess the number of bands influenced by Slade; I mean beyond the ones that actually admit it? They still sound awesome today after all the years.

  • If you listen to music this is one of the best intros ever, the drum, the guitar giving a taste of what is to come. Then Noddy letting rip with his voice, this track is good enough to be an instrumental in it's own right. If you wear headphones this will blow your brains out when turned up, and by god does it sound good.
