[Watch in HD] History has been made at the Monticello Railway Museum in Monticello, Illinois. Just in time for the yearly railroad event at the museum ("Railroad Days"), the Southern 401's restoration has been complete. 401 was built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1907. It weighs 82 tons and is on a 2-8-0 wheel arrangement. The 401 was purchased by Monticello in 1967 from Alabama Asphaltic Limestone in Margerum, Alabama. It was then shipped to Decatur, Illinois and arrived in January 1968. In October 1971, it was towed on its own wheels to Monticello. The unit from 1971 to 1995 was on display until a donor stepped forward to propose an idea of restoring a steam locomotive to the museum, in which an operating steam locomotive had never ran at the museum since 1987. Ever since 1995, the unit was in restoration status until September 2010, when the restoration was complete and the unit moved under its own power in almost 50 years. Here in this video, we see Southern 401 in action as it pulls a southbound passenger train out of Nelson's Crossing and heads for the Monticello Wabash Depot located in downtown Monticello, Illinois.
