Dionysus or Bacchus

In classical mythology, Dionysus or Dionysos (in Greek, Διόνυσος or Διώνυσος; associated with Roman Liber), is the god of wine, the inspirer of ritual madness and ecstasy, and a major figure of Greek mythology. The geographical origins of his cult were unknown, but almost all myths depicted him as having "foreign" (i.e. non-Greek) origins.

He was also known as Bacchus and the frenzy he induces, bakcheia. He is the patron deity of agriculture and the theatre. He was also known as the Liberator (Eleutherios), freeing one from one's normal self, by madness, ecstasy, or wine.

The divine mission of Dionysus was to mingle the music of the aulos and to bring an end to care and worry.

Scholars have discussed Dionysus' relationship to the "cult of the souls" and his ability to preside over communication between the living and the dead.

In Greek mythology Dionysus is made to be a son of Zeus and Semele; other versions of the myth contend that he is a son of Zeus and Persephone. He is described as being womanly or "man-womanish".

The name Dionysos is of uncertain significance; its -nysos element may well be non-Greek in origin, but its dio- element has been associated since antiquity with Zeus (genitive Dios). Nysa, for Greek writers, is either the nymph who nursed him, or the mountain where he was attended by several nymphs (the Nysiads), who fed him and made him immortal as directed by Hermes.

The retinue of Dionysus was called the Thiasus and comprised chiefly Maenads.

  • I watched a Danish production of Hercules as a musical today.... I fell in love with Dionysos.. May just be the way they did him.. But he was really, really awesome <3

  • sexual degeneration? by the looks of it you are a pagan too, like me, but the dacian gods were also associated with wine and chotnic properties like Sabazius

  • @eddiemurphyfan100 well it's actually a bit more spiritual than that, the grapevine's cultivation and an understanding of its life cycle (believe to embody the living god) and the fermentation of wine from its dismembered body (associated with the god's essence in the underworld). Most importantly, however, the intoxicating and disinhibiting effects of wine were regarded as due to possession by the god's spirit

  • i always thought Dionysus was a useless God. I mean, think about it! All the other Olympian Gods have cool titles like the God of Thunder, God of War, God of Love, and he's a God of WINE?!! I mean what's next, the God of playing with yourself ?

  • @TonDogWayner Funny you should bring up Morrison.....after all Woodstock was the celebration of the ancient god Dionysus.

  • please dont just see this figure as an ancient god! hes actually together ´with apollon,a metafor for the human right brain. These two figures represents and covers all of the human features and sides. researching after this has changed my life, please check out Hemispheres by Rush and Deep inner game by David Deangelo.

  • sexual degeneration? dude that's a very old opinion, you should review your knowledge of Dionysus. unfortunately I don't make videos for youtube but I publish books.

  • @GeneralAmeli0 Somethings are better left un-pondered my friend..

  • @GeneralAmeli0 he was represented either as very manly or very feminine, sometimes charmer of women sometimes a drunk, and besides "sexual degeneration" is quite self explenatory
