NEW LIVERPOOL FOLK SONG WRITTEN BY TONY FLANAGAN ABOUT ST MARYS OF THE ANGELS

ST MARYS OF THE ANGELS

at the end of great homer
just off scotland road
stands a beautiful church
full of beautiful souls
and for one hundred years
god had a home
at the end of great homer
just off scotland road

each sunday the people
in there sunday clothes
would walk hand in hand
in there buttons and bows
they would kneel to the floor
with there heads gently bowed
as ave maria
was sang by the crowd

and at each may proccession
the children would sing
first holy communion
the bells they would ring
one hundred confessions
one hundred sins
one hundred hail marys
you forgave everything

for youve seen one hundred years
of laughter and tears
hundreds of heart aches
hundreds of prayers
one hundred white weddings
blessed one hundred gold rings
baptised one hundred small babys
as the chior would sing
st marys of the angels
would you reopen your doors
so once again we can pray
say a prayer for us all

the heart of a church
doesnt beat in its steeple
the real silver and gold
is the prayers of its people
and the real marble pillers
was the strength of the poor
the most beautiful paintings
didnt hang on the wall
its the memories painted
on the minds of us all
as we sat and we prayed
knowing god heard loved us all

st marys of the angels
would you reopen your doors
so once again we can pray
say a prayer for us all
at the end of great homer
just off scotland road
where for one hundred years
god had a home

  • Hi Tony, iv been trying to find out some info on St marys church but finding it really differcult :-( Would you be so kind as to fill in some blanks for me please?

  • @Leannecreighton24 ..you find all the info you need on the scotty press site...i remember being chased as a child by an old friar there called father felix..we were all terriefied of him...he had a big white beard and was very old..i mention him in my song..my mothers lullaby...all the best..tony

  • its with great sadness that i must tell you all that kay kelly..the lady who did her utmost to save st marys of the angels has passed away...we have lost a great lady...my condolences to kays family....tony flanagan and family

  • Tony this is GREAT ! ARe you singing it also? You know I never thought of a church like that before--about all the "LIFE' that goes on there--the good times and the bad times--- a great idea for a folksong ! love it ! I was raised Catholic so I can relate to the nuns :-)

  • i love writing about real stories and real people.sadly .the church is shut down now and is used by the philomonic orchestra as a practice room...wich seems a million miles away from the poor who prayed as they put there pennies on the plate as it was passed around ...all the best...tony flanagan

  • i forgot to answer your question...yes i am singing the song.....old gravel vioce...all the best ..tony flanagan
