This video describes the Sound Lab ULTIMATE. The latest project from Music From Outer Space. This is the largest most feature-rich single board analog synthesizer offered by MFOS. It is a challenging but very rewarding project. I offer an excellent quality PCB and professionally machined and silk-screened front and auxilliary panels for this project but as always you can make your own if you like. The synth's front panel is explored and several sample sounds are provided to show off some of the ULTIMATE's capabilities.

  • When trying to design a nice feature set with a reasonable level of complexity you often have to defer the addition of elements to a satellite product. The ULTIMATE Expander is the satellite unit that includes several more functional units. It has a state variable filter (LP, BP, and HP) that doubles as a sine oscillator as well as an ADSR EG. The MFOS 10 step or 16 step seq.s can provides arpeggiation. The ULTIMATE's white noise can be given a pink characteristic using it's low pass filter.

  • Ray, are you possibly thinking of designing a polysynth?

  • @cheddybumpkins While I don't have a polyphonic synth on the drawing board you can buy a MIDI to CV convertor with multiple outputs that would permit you to play several "voices" made up of VCOs, VCF, and VCA from your modular. I made a cool polyphonic synth in the dim past... about 25 years ago and somehow I lost the documentation. I have a few projects on the bench right now but in the future I may revisit and share that old design if I can remember what I did .

  • I am building the ULTIMATE now, just finished matching x-sistors and hope to use 3.5mm jacks instead of bananas. Would the ULTIMATE be modifiable to use all 3.5mm jacks with possible use of "multiple" modules that provide parallel connection (i.e. since bananas are stackable, why not, right?). Hope to work it with paia/doepfer equipment.

  • @kitdemos It should work fine with the 3.5mm jacks (if they fit why not) as long as you connect the panel to the signal ground (power supply ground). I can see taking an output to multiple inputs but I would avoid shorting multiple outputs to one input completely since that would be connecting many low impedance circuit points to one another and would probably not have the effect you intended. As far as working with other modules I would make the assumption that things will work fine.

  • Awesome! I got all excited then but then realised i have pretty much zero knowledge of electronics

  • @XysteRST205 You can always learn. Check out the "How Can I Start Learning About Electronics?" page at Music From Outer Space. It's under Synth-DIY 101 in the Synth DIY tree.

  • How do you play it if it's just a box?

  • @hypervisionaryrealm It does too have a sine wave generator(the filter can be one).

  • hi ray just bought my irst ever project from you the WSG, i cant wait and im so excited I might pee my pants lmao, cheers for your awesome designs, if i get on well with this then you will defo have more of my money and admiration cheesr ross

  • Is it possible to get complete built synths from you to?

I want to play the ready product, the building is none of my interest, but i maybe still would love to have one of your synths ;)

  • i thought my wsg was awesome :D

  • It does not have a sine wave generator??? What about pink noise??? Does it have an appeggerator???A "killer" synthe HAS to have sine, pink and appeggeration! :-)

  • It does not have a sine wave generator??? What about pink noise??? Does it have an appeggerator???

  • How feasable would it be to replace all the patch points and leads on this design with one centralised patch programmer using digital switching?

  • is it possible to have a midi in?
