The Obama administration has announced it has selected the Thomson Correctional Center in the Midwest state of Illinois to house terrorism suspects now being held at the US military base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The move would be a major step towards closing the Guantanamo facility, which President Obama promised he would do within a year of taking office. The Thomson prison would be acquired by the federal government. But Congress, which passed a law forbidding Guantanamo detainees from being housed in the United States except for trial, would have to go along. VOA's Kane Farabaugh reports that in the village of Thomson, there are misgivings but also hopes the move will bring jobs and money to an area suffering from high unemployment.
