This classic country blues was written by blues mandolinist Yank Rachell (1910-1997). It's been covered by many. Yank claimed he was singing about "my baby" and not about "the Katy" which most take to mean the Kansas and Topeka RR. But Taj Mahal sang it as Katy back in 1968 or so, and that's what stuck. Here are The Boundarymen in practice (What!? they practice?) working out an new arrangement. The Boundarymen, from Connecticut, are Steve Barrett, bass; David Bates, harmonica; Peter Lewis, guitar and vocals.

You may know yer blues, but you don't know yer railroads. The "Katy" was, and is, the common nickname for the Missouri-Kansas-Texas (MKT) Railroad. Indeed, the town of Katy, Texas was named because it was an MKT water stop.

Although the song was written by James "Yank" Rachell, it was at first recorded by another well-known blues musician, Taj Mahal (nee Henry St. Clair), in 1968; many people strongly identify this song with the Blues Brothers' 1979 cover version.
