LISAN [leaving] is a musical work for film and live musicians, which is inspired by the narratives and the plight of the Iraya-Mangyan people of Mindoro Island in the Philippines. The story centers on the life of Lupaynin and his wife Aghumba, from among the marginalized indigenous minorities living in the fringes of an already denuded and encroached rainforest, which no longer served as their zone of escape from armed conflict and development aggression. Finding Aghumba raped by patrolling militiamen, Lupaynin laments bitterly and then decides to take matters into his own hands; and with a bolo in hand, he goes out to hunt down those who murdered his wife. Baes conceptualized the latter part of this work [as featured in this clip] along the idea of 'annihilating' the hyper-realities of the "Dolby surround" by putting live musicians sitiing with the audience and then having the audience participate in the performance as they are given pairs of pebbles to play. On the screen, as the credits begin to roll, the film deliberately starts showing shadows of an audience "leaving" as in a pirated DVD. After which, the barriers of the screen are further broken as the actor in the movie comes out live into the audience continuing to hunt down the antagonists, as if running amok within the 'forest of sounds' created by the live musicians and the audience.
Para kay Mamay Anghel at sa lahat ng nagtatanggol sa liping Iraya-Mangyan, mula ka 'Taga-Maynila'
