Afraid to be Alone (poem)

I read a poem that I wrote when I was around 15. The photographs were taken in Northern Ireland. I do hope you enjoy. =)


Afraid to be Alone

I am
all alone.
Each breath
that slips from
my mouth
rips open the
silence.
Nervous noises
surround me.
They move
closer,
swallowing
my thoughts
whole.
Fear crawls
up my spine,
injecting me with its
venom.
My eyes chase
each
subtle
movement.
The wind
teasing me
with its relentless
games.
I feel
my heart
thumping rapidly
in my chest,
as though
it knows
something
I do not,
and is trying
franticly
to escape.
My blood
surges
through my
body,
like a
raging river.
I am alive,
aware,
afraid.
Scared,
simply because
I am
all alone.

This one's my favorite. The cyclic structure, the increase of speed, the created tension, and then the sudden stop, it's really perfect. One loses the breath, forgets each line when the next one arrives, feeling like only one second passes by in slow motion.

Thanks. I actually wasn't sure how it would turn out on the recording.. I am much better at reading my poems to an audience I can see and interact with.  =)
