The Clash used many songs like this one to tell stories of people they saw along the way fall to drugs. They mention Johny Thunders a number of times. They encountered him first with Malcolm McLaren and the Sex Pistols on one of their first tours. Thunders, a junkie was always looking for a fix. They refer to him in City of the Dead as "New York Johnny"
