@mjmacmtenor Mannerisms? She brings drama to her intepretations. Her Il Pirata is surely the best, it is original, not trying to be Callas like all the other great sopranos. Renee is simply a breath of fresh air. She is intelligent, unbelievably talented and makes you listen to arias which have been perfomred to death by others in the most boring ways, like you hear the aria for the very first time and rediscover the excitement and beautiy.

@spsp2sp3sp3dsp3d2 She is still a great soprano of not the greates at this moment.

Exactly... even when she was singing Strauss back then (early 90s) There was a lot more authenticity and honesty to the music when she was singing.. just listen to her Pesaro Armida in ~17 years ago... She is still very good with Massenet & Co. and R Strauss, but pity she did not do more belcanto when she was free of annoying sighs, ad lib glissandi and scoops

Her Armida will be interesting. That's all I'm saying.

OMFG! IS THAT FLEMING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
She sounds amazing!!! Why couldn't she have sung all of Rossini's great heroines? that doesn't evn sound like her! This a WONDERFUL recording of her voice!!!

Fleming is very good her - before her sultry, jazz-style cooing set in. The sound is also less throaty than now. Zambalis does not have a very rich tone.

Except for the inaccurate runs, fluffed top notes, lack of top e flat, and the usual overpowering self-indulgence.

Her recent Traviatas at Covent Garden were extraordinary.
Renee could have been a great Semiramide but the time has past. She doesn't sing like this anymore. Its unfortuante because people who haven't heard her sing like this tend to bash her a lot. She was good!

I have noticed that many people "decry" Renee for singing bel canto. They complain about her lack of style, poor technique, vocal mannerisms. It seems surprising considering her extensive experience and success in singing Mozart. Yet, when one listens to recent recordings (Il Pirata anyone?), I must agree with the detractors (especially about mannerisisms). How nice to hear this earlier recording. Here she is a beautiful bel canto singer with a gorgeous natural sound and secure technique!?
