the last 6.48 minutes of henri cluozot's 'la prisonniere' (1968) including the 'trippy' dream sequence plus the credits with a delightful score provided by mahler.
breathtaking finale, a collage of striking images that somehow manages to sum up the whole narrative as well as the girl's emotional disorientation. she is comatose after a suicide attempt on the railway track. the suicide motif is recurring: clouzot seems to suggest it results from a loss of moral compass in modern art/life.
after the girl wakes she's mumbling 'stan, stan', alas it is not erratic stan who is by her bedside, but her bewildered-looking hubby. gilbert's last lines: 'don't worry, everything will be fine'.
or will it?
