  • Also interesting to see how its made its way into the repertoire of Western singers. All sorts of choral versions, and folk versions on YouTube. There's even a Serbian version (which I particularly like).

Pantun, by the way, are simple rhymes, usually of four lines, and very rarely six. Usually they rhyme a,b,a,b. The first two lines don't usually make sense, they're there to give form, meter and rhyme to the pantun. The second two lines carry the message.

  • Interesting indeed.. look for other versions from Malaysia and Indonesia. In Malaysia it is spelled "Suriram", in Indonesia "Soleram" (which I just found out tonight). In Malaysia it is usually sung in this manner, with the chorus interspersed with pantun (usually extemporaneously selected). When in a group, singers take turns to choose and sing a pantun. By contrast, all the Indonesian versions I've come across tonight seem to have the same lyrics (and the same pantun).

  • Note the rhyming pattern (matahari-tertambat-mencari-mendapat) which is characteristic of the pantun. The first 2 lines are a puzzle, followed by 2 lines with a more explicit message that rhymes with the first 2.

The sun is high: The parent hopes to see the child grow tall and shine as they reach their dreams.

Young calf dies: The parent hopes the child will be obedient for it will save them from misfortune

I've been searching: The parent has prayed a long time for this child to come

  • The lyrics mean:

    Lullabye, lullabye-bye-bye

    Lullabye sweet lovely one

The sun is as high as it can be

Young calf dies of being tethered

I've been searching (for you) for so long

And just now I finally got (you)

  • Much better than Miriam Makeba's version. At least this group pronounced the words correctly. The arrangement also feels more real, reminds me of some 1940's Portuguese-Indonesian keroncong. Ilyasr2's lyrics is the correct version.

  • Suliram, Suliram, ram, ram,Adu hai indung seorang,

    Suliram yang manis.

    Tinggi-tinggilah tinggi, si matahari,

    Anaklah kerbau mati tertambat,

    Sudahlah lama saya mencari

    Baru sekarang saya mendapat

Suliram, Suliram, ram, ram,Adu hai indung seorang,

    Suliram yang manis.

  • Suliram, suliram, ram, ram Suliram yang manis Adu hai indung suhoorang Bidjakla sana dipandang manis Tingi la, tingi, si matahari Suliram, Anakla koorbau mati toortambat Suliram, sudala lama saiya menchari Baru sekarang sa ya mendapat La suliram, suliram, ram, ram Suliram yang manis Adu hai indung suhoorang Bidjakla sana dipandang manis
