QUESTIONER: [...] Will you, sir [refrain from immigrant bashing in your campaign]?
JOHN MCCAIN: Yes, ma'am. I think that, in due respect, I will always and have always 'refrained' from that and have condemned people who have done that. So all I can do is renew my commitment to you and I thank you. I will not do that. Yes, ma'am.
QUESTIONER: Sir, I know we've had your commitment, but many of the candidates in your party are not following your leadership. Immigrant bashing has become a very integral part of campaigns and that's what we're asking you. If you, as leader of your party, will instruct your candidates, across the country, to refrain from continuing that.
MCCAIN: Yes. Of course and I announced it throughout, but I also want to say to you that I want to have a respectful campaign. I want a respectful campaign. That's what Americans want.
They're tired of the sound bytes. They're tired of the back and forth. They're tired of the allegations and the quotes, misquotes or misstatements.
I think the best way we could do that was to have, as I said, have Senator Obama right here on the stage with me and both of us could have made that commitment to you together. I make that commitment to you now and I will continue to denounce that kind of behavior.
