OK, well I have been playing this one for what seems like forever now ( fairly exclusivly too ) I have klinda lost perspective on it I have been trying to nail it for so long :p

Its not note for note by any stretch of the imagination, but that was my initial quest :p some of it is fairly close to the origional but then parts deviate, especially in the solo, his timing is just way to hard to follow, so I kinda just did a kinda sound a like version of the solo,

Its a fruxtrating song in ways as its so easy to mess up just one little bit and ruin an otehrwise decent cover ;) or have your camera run out of battery just as you nail the good one :p

But I need a break from this song and I felt I might as well put up what I have on it s far, the solo is messed up in parts, and I don't really like the tone on that part so much, I was using my DSL 401 and going from orange to red and its jsuuttoo big a boost , I need a nice tube screamer type pedal I think to get a better solo tone.

Other than that I messed up a few bits here and there but I just need to put this up and give it a rest for a while I think :p

  • thanks heaps ;) I think I could spend my whole life figuring out all the versions Hendrix did on this song, they all have bits that I just love so much. I could listen to him jam to this for hours non stop, and I bet he could have without repeating himself ;)

  • nice cover, nice guitar it's a dead ringer for mine. mine is an 89 american standard, yours?

  • cheers ;) its actually a 2006 ? MIM standard, sometime around then anyway.

its a nice guitar, its actually my wifes ;)

  • Thanks dude,

I was trying to do this by ear, but used vanderbuilly a fair bit for areas I was stuck on, even some of his videos I struggled with getting it right from so settled for close :p But it is an awesome lesson.

I am thinking of maybe hear my train a comin next , but look forward to your SRV cover, all his stuff is crazy ;)

  • Great job, man! You got it.

Did you learn to play this from vanderbilly's lesson? That's the best lesson ever for this song.

Keep on it, bro. You're doing great.

try Texas Flood by SRV. That's what I'm working on now. It's crazy!

  • I have actually ended up having a bit of a go at SRV, tin pan alley and honey bee ;) jeez hes hard to copy ;)

  • DUDE...you gotta get the vibrato down. jimi would sound like a cat in a woodchiper if there was no vibrato other then that nice video

  • If you you dont like the tone put a 12dw7 in v2 position, looking at the back of the amp its the 2nd small tube to the left, doest need to be biased.

  • Excellent job man. I just imrov this one, no way I can get close to Jimi.

  • man you sounds like Lou Reed.

    check out his soungs

  • Nice job. You might want to try a smaller pick. I use various picks for various techniques. Small "jazz" picks are best for speed, IMHO. Regarding your self-loathing (jk) you are good, you just need more time in service and as far as timing is concerned, try to think in 16ths and listen to the percussiveness of the lick, rather than the actual note, to figure out the timing.

Keep rockin' dude. You have talent.

  • good stuff -
