Step#1:
go to http://getipodwizard.com/download.php

under "download links" this link will appear:
Latest version - iPodWizard v1.3

click it, choose "save file", and "okay".

Step#2:
go to http://www.freewebs.com/theislander1

here you will find examples of all the "layouts" you can choose for your ipod.
scroll to the bottom of the webpage.
click the word "download" within "Check Download page.."

Step #3:
choose the layout of your choice. the example i will be using is called:
"Hybrid 3.5 original layout (fixed the icons' spacing)"

so under that either choose "5g Firmware" or "5.5g Firmware"

(you can tell whether your ipod is a 5th generation or 5.5 generation ipod by going to music, then scroll all the way to the bottom. if there is a search feature, then it's a 5.5g, if not it's a 5g.)

in my example, i will download the 5.5g firmware.

click "5.5 firmware". you will be redirected to a new webpage, and then click "Click here to start download.." and then "save file".

(before exiting the webpage, notice in the description in the right if it is a .rar file or a .bin file)

in this example, the file is a .rar file ("Hybrid 3.5 original layout - 5.5G.rar") . therefore, step#4 is needed. if it's a .bin file, you can skip step#4.

Step#4:
go to http://download.cnet.com/WinRAR/3000-2250_4-10007677.html
click "download now" and "save file"

this will convert the .rar file to a .bin file.

Step#5: (also optional if you already downloaded a .bin file)
open winRAR
find the .rar file you downloaded.
click on it, to where the file is highlighted.
now click "wizard"
select "unpack an archive" and click "next"
click "next again"
click "finish"

the new file will open up in a new window.

Step#6:
right click on "ipod wizard" and click "run as administrator"
(close the "tip of the day")

under "edit mode" click on the drop box and choose "firmware file"
then click on "open firmware"
double click on the firmware you downloaded.

in this example, it is called "Hybrid 3.5 original layout - 5.5G.bin"

Step#7:
under "index" click on the drop box and click on number "138"
(or on other firmware, you might need to click on number "282")

if you dislike the picture you see, you can easily change it to something else.

Step#8: (optional for everyone)
to chang the background, find a picture you like first.

either off your computer or on the web.

now open that picture with paint.

go to "image" and click on "resize/skew"

play around with the image until it looks about the same size as the picture already in the firmware.

(this is because it has to be 320x240 pixels)

now go to "image" and click on "attributes"

under "width" it should say "320" and under "height" it should say "240". if not, change it now.

save the image.

Step#9: (only if you did step#8)
go back to ipod wizard (make sure your firmware is already loadedn and you are on #138) and click on "load bitman"

find the picture you changed to 320x240 pixels and double click on it.

Step#10:
open itunes.
connect your ipod to your computer.
click on your ipod under "devices".
checkmark "enable disk use" and click apply. a warning will pop up, and just click "okay".
make sure your ipod is flashing the "do not disconnect" sign.
now close itunes.
(ipod wizard sometimes doesn't work unless itunes is closed)

go back to ipod wizard and make sure at the top right it has the name of your ipod up. if it says "unmounted" you will need to close ipod wizard and reopen it, reload the firmware, and reload your new background.

it should now have the name of your ipod at the top righthand corner.

now click "write to ipod"

a pop up will come up saying it has been wrtten successfully, click "okay".

close ipodwizard.

open itunes again.
click on your ipod under "devices"
uncheck "enable disk use"
click "apply".
your ipod should not restart.
disconnect while restarting.
(if it does not restart on it's own, hold the center and top "menu" button down together until it restarts and unplug it)

that's it!
