id love to have a replica of Wyatt Earps 'buntline revolver' hung above my bedroom door XD

they didnt have the same quality bullets we have today. so even if a hit would end up being lethal, it could take a while for people to bleed out. Shotguns were the best for knockdown power, or high powered rifles. pistols were rather ineffective though.

Not true; and for a number of reasons.

AMERICAN HANDGUNNER: Old West handguns may have fouled up quickly from blackpowder. They may have been slow to reload, and they may have had the most rudimentary of sights. But brothers, let me tell you something. They were nothing you'd want to hide behind a card table from, or a watering trough, or a wagon box, or even a thin wooden wall. Someone would have shot you dead, neat as a pin.

A) learning to aim a gun well and shooting it accurately takes time, and even when under no stress is not the easiest thing to preform at a distance.
b) Add movement and someone firing back and it's no wonder that they missed quite a bit fore hitting someone. Also remember the guns back then were not as powerful as what we have today, so the stopping power was not as great
