Lol, I understand that buss situation completely.

I was in Oxford this last summer (my first time in England ever), and I was amazed by the people in buses who had their groceries or other stuff on the seats next to them, preventing the fellow passengers from sitting!

True, I've seen it happen in Finland too, but usually as soon as someone enters the bus and is looking for a seat, people usually collect their stuff from the seats to allow others to sit. :'D

too right. i once saw a woman on a bus who had her KEYS beside her, and i know youre thinking 'they might not have been hers' but when an old man tried to sit next to her she waved him away saying 'don't sit on my keys!'. Yes, Louie, the society in which we live is falling to ruin.
