NEWS that miniature steam engines would be on display in Willand on Saturday October 24 sparked interest among railway enthusiasts more than 1,000 miles away.
Organisers of an exhibition of model trains and British railways received inquiries from collectors in Portugal, who were keen to identify a range of European models dating back to the 1930s.
David, who spent a year preparing the event held at Willand Village Hall, welcomed nearly 200 visitors to the show and exhibitors from across the Westcountry.
A total of 11 track-layouts were displayed, including a OO gauge version of the Culm Valley Railway, which ceased operating on October 31, 1975, and two HO gauge scale networks of Lusigny-sur- e-Loir in France and the Stuttgart tramway in Germany.
David, who is studying for a BTEC National Diploma in Business Studies at Exeter College, displayed a layout based on the 1963 London Waterloo to Exeter Central line.
A ride-on London and North Eastern A4, similar to the 4468 Mallard which set the world speed record for steam locomotives at 126mph in July 1938, was also a popular spectacle.
At two, he formed an interest in model railways after he got his hands on his father Peter's old set, which had been in the attic for more than 20 years.
David hopes the club will be able to raise enough money to build a scale model of the old Tiverton Junction station in Willand.
