The US has the highest incarceration rate in the world, according to the International Centre for Prison Studies at King's College London. Numbers from March 2008 show the U.S. has 748 people in prison for every 100,000 people. Russia comes in second with 595 prisoners per 100.000 people. England only has 154 per 100,000

Interestingly, the majority of those incarcerated in federal U.S. facilities are there for drug offences (source: U.S. Department of Justice statistics, "Prisoners in 2008")
