@biclink that's one of the few great things about large, post industrial societies. We don't all have to be using the majority of our time to make pots and plant fields in order to keep ourselves and families functioning. There are plenty of people out there developing useful things, which creates plenty of time for people who want to spend all their energy developing things that are beautiful just to be beautiful, to do so.

ONe thing I would love to see is a sculpture that uses the different expansion rates of different metals to create a flower that opens by itself in sunlight and closes in the cold. On a cloudy day, with patches of sunlight and shade, it would seem alive.

I'm sorry , but just can't see the point. With the time and energy used to build this thing one could have made something useful.
