This is what a poor, nearly shot engine sounds like in a tiny Geo Metro. If you are looking to buy a small Geo Metro that a seller has, which has an engine that sounds like this, do not let that seller tell you, "Oh, that's normal", or "That's how they all sound..." or "That's how all little three cylinder cars sound..." All lies.

Chances are the engine has some bad valves, and is only running on two of the three cylinders. The engine is likely completely shot, practically worthless, and will likely need to be swapped out with another engine just to salvage the car.

You are better off looking for a different car.

  • How long do these three cylinder engines last?

  • Well, as with all machines, you get out of them what the owner puts in to them. I currently have five Geos, all of them 3-cylinders, and all seem to run fine for being nearly 20 years old.

  • You need to get your engine looked at man. That is not supposed to sound like that. sounds like piston slap. We own this car and its not the quietest thing in the world but purrs, not ticks.

  • I know. I've already had a different engine installed into the car. This video was supposed to be more-or-less what a bad engine sounds like, so that people could compare the sound this one makes with one that they are looking to buy.

If a seller with a similar-sounding engine tries to tell an interested buyer, "Oh, they all sound like that...", hopefully a buyer would know better after having watched this video and BEFORE buying the car.

  • @Prizm2356 my geo metro 1.0 3 cylinder has 297,800 miles on it and i am still getting bout 40 psi per cylinder so for me they last for a long time. the only this is the lifters are starting to tick on it. but other than that if it makes it to 300,000 miles before i have to rebuild the engine i will officially wash it....maybe even some wax.

  • that sounds bad

  • @Prizm2356 regular maintenance will make is last for ever as with any car.

  • that motor is shot man. if i were u i would rebuild it if u havent yet. when i got mine i always done the motor first than fixed them up. the would haul ass. but any ways i would rebuild that motor.

  • Hey,

Mine had that noise, and it turned out to be a shattered piston! I rebuilt the motor, and it is doing fine now. I bored it out .020, and put all new components in. I put a white top on mine, and that looks cool.

  • I had the same car and engine sounded the same...it was a burnt valve...went again...then bought engine from junkyard...went again. Was convinced horrible engines but bought suzuki swift..(same engine) and have over 300k of original kms on it and it still runs fine. I think it was just bad luck getting engines that weren't maintained. This one has been amazing though.

  • Hey, air conditioned! Rare for convertible Metro.

I have a Diesel Geo Metro.... betcha ain't got one of them!

  • how can u not have a radio yeesh

  • shouldv just punched the gas and put it out of its missery

  • Ha ha? Well, maybe, but mine sounded exactly the same, turned out #2 piston was shattered, probably from being overheated. I chose to overhaul my engine, in order to know what is in it.

It is much easier to build than a Chevy 350!
