Goldleisten - the way they should be!
During the past centuries, it was usual in include a room's walls in the furnishing. Most of all in castles, villas, and manors, high skirting boards, half-high or high paneling were important parts of a sophisticated and impressive furnishing.

The high baseboards and paneling hade more than one function: not only did the paneling save the lower half of a room's wall, it also insulated the room from the inside during the winter months. Most of all the paneling served as a decoration: generously decorated, ornamented, carved, and sometimes even painted, they are, even until today, a feast for the beholder's eyes.

Over the years, these paneling were reduced. During the second half of the last century, the paneling was shrunken to a hardly visible minimum. What remained were the small skirting boards that seemly serve as a cover for the joints and to save the walls from the floor cloth during cleaning. This is how precious and decorative high baseboards fell into oblivion.
