I do this too...when my boyfriend goes to the bar in a pub or restuarant, I get my phone out and pretend to be absorbed in some kind of text or something, when I'm actually flicking through the menu options.
I've done that thing as well when I realise I'm going the wrong way and then I pretend to get a phone call that requires me to turn around.

To avoid street canvassers, I pretend to suddenly see something of huge concern in the distance, or up high on a building. They either hesitate in approching you (as you might be a doctor or a rescuer about to leap into emergency action, or something), or their curiosity distracts their attention. Either way, it buys you just enough time to walk past them.
Works a treat, never fails. ;-)
