Having a design on paper (regardless of how good it maybe) is one thing, but putting it into production is another. Hence, the modular Trent design. Instead of developing a complete new engine for every new aircraft type (which is highly expensive) the development tweaks on more what is already there and tunes it into what is exactly required. Hence, RR power the first flights.
