1) 9/11? What? You can't compare a great scientific feat, the first space achievement to a mass-murder of 4000 people.
2) Krushchev? All he did was send money. Sergey Korolyov was the man in charge of all Soviet space operations.
3) People were simply in awe, pointing their radios at the sky, hearing the satellite beep, not afraid of Sputnik dropping bombs! And, how could an explosion of 184 pounds of metal in space even remotely affect Earth?
