Using the default windows along with the preset walls in 3ds max you can make them see through without cutting a hole in the wall. This is done by linking the window with the wall, unfortunately this can't be done with editable polys, only the AEC wall.

Note if you want to texture the windows, use a muti/sub object material and use ID3 for the glass and the others for the frame.

  • whats the tool on 2:36 i cant find it nowhere!!!

  • @Guss67T Its called 'select and link' if yours isn't there u may have just hidden the tool bar, u might be able find the same button in the 'group' menu. If not your'll have to go to the customize menu and turn on the group tool bar

  • Hello good tutorial, now ive made the window and linked it to the wall how do apply a material to it? I know i can select the window and get a material from my library but when i apply the material either by dragging it or using the apply to selection button it applies it to everything, panes and frame, how do u apply one material to the pane and another to the frame? Do u use a multi-sub object material or do u convert the window to an editable poly? If the latter, can i revert it back? THANKS!

  • @Nastypsychoboy Hi, it does say in the information about the video, 'to texture the windows, use a muti/sub object material and use ID3 for the glass and the others for the frame'

if u want the frame in different colours then just use the other ID numbers and see what effects each part (can't remember of head but think there is 4 frame ID's) (for ease of use I wouldn't recommend converting the window to a editable poly at any point unless u have to)

  • @mrkurtman k i need some help about the part where ye put a different material on the glass than on the frame, what is that multi/sub? and ID3? i dont know what these things are? pls help nice vid btw

  • @b112938 Multi/Sub is a material type, it allows lots of different materials/bitmaps on one object. Each object you create can have a number of ID's for example for a box you could have 6 ID's one for each side and then you can assign a different material or bitmap to each of them. With the windows they have by default been assigned ID's for each section, ie the glass, the frame, the window sill etc. Do a search for material ID's and for Multi/Sub materials for other peoples tutorials on them.
