One of the first test projects I built with my Arduino. The LEDs come on a flexible 5m roll and can be stuck to anything you want. [In the video I've put masking tape over them since they're really bright.]

The Arduino is powered by an external power adapter delivering 12V, which is reduced to 5V by the internal voltage regulator. The LEDs are switched using high power NPN transistors via PWM.

The display is a 4-line standard LCD from RS Components using a 4-bit parallel interface and the LiquidCrystal library.

  • Would you be willing to share the code? It's exactly what I need to study for my project.

  • Hi David,

Could you give us a little more info on your circuit. What does the IC do ? Is that a RTC ?

What kind of current are those led's drawing through the transistor.

Thanks for any info, this is pretty much exactly what i want to do, just undecided on the best way !
