Leptin is a molecule that acts in the brain to regulate appetite, energy expenditure and bone mass. Gerard Karsenty and his colleagues explain how they discovered that these effects of leptin are mediated through the neurotransmitter serotonin, the molecule that is targeted by a number of psychiatric medications.
