Carbondale resident Katy Rushin stretches after a roller derby practice Aug. 27, at the Williamson County Pavilion. Rushin, who began playing the sport in Asheville, N.C., started the team after moving back to the area about a year ago. The team, which is working to get sanctioned, plans to host a scrimmage for the public in December and begin competing against other regional teams by next summer. Rushin credits the physicality of the sport with being a major draw for many of the members and contributes to its popularity. We are a 21-and-up league, so most of us are students or have some sort of a career and are looking for a release. You get a lot of aggression out slamming into somebody, Rushin said.
