Induction coil gun tests. This is also called a Thompson coil. I am
using a 4" aluminum projectile in these tests, although the coil gun
was designed for a 6" one pound projectile.

  • Please, can you tell me the parametres of your capacitor bank and coil? What do you use as tiristor to make a shot and discharge capacitor? I have 4 special pulse Nippon electrolyc caps 450v 4700uF, what can you advice to make the same powerful induction gun?

Please, help me with informanion, I did the same gun, but it had only 5J in the projectile :(.

  • @GaussFanat My capacitor is rated at 230uf and 7kv. I’m using a triggered air gap for switching, but at 450v a thyristor will be more practical. I have found that a good coil diameter is 6” wide. Just coil up romex wire in a flat coil until it is 6” wide, and then connect the ground wire in series with one of the other wires. For maximum efficiency, the projectile should be aluminum and the same diameter as the coil, although a smaller diameter projectile will have a much higher velocity.

  • Just wind a normal coil...get some aluminum-tubing fitting your barrel (inside) and you are good to go.

  • @AnselmoFanZero I am definitely going to try that

  • nice job making a target this time

  • @pacman529 thanks

  • Not shoot it at a person!

  • @railgun22101

    Thank you!

  • You should try using a Double Layer Electro-Chemical capacitor aka supercaps.

A slug made of aluminum would do it as well.

Place it right after the center of the coil.
