i think youve misunderstood the context of the song. neil young doesnt say its the worst thing in the world, he sings about how it led to the waste of an awful lot of good talent in the time when he was establishing himself as a musician

peter can probably relate to the song like that, what with friends like wolfman and patrick walden throwing their talent away, and looking in the mirror at himself. so pete sings it almost in retrospect of himself and others in a way.
