I decided to start with star magician for the optional bosses because it looked like it was the easiest. That's not saying much because this thing kicked my ass all over the place compared to the final boss. I must have tried this 20 times before I found a strategy that worked.
Strategy: First thing is to stop the refresh balls from healing him. I tried an all out summon rush and it failed because I was too slow. I couldn't kill the ball before it healed which basically nullifies one of my summons and I really can't afford to lose summon damage because again, I don't have access to 27 djinn on the 3 characters I'm not using. A combo of lull/doldrum and lull/ivy with agility boosts effectively stops the refresh balls from ever doing anything.
Next thing is to take out the guardian balls quickly. I've had battles where they've shielded 3 turns in a row because they're right on the outer edge, don't take enough summon damage and didn't die fast enough. That's why I targeted my summons to the left the 1st 2 turns so I could kill the guardian balls. I believe even if it had shielded on either of those turns, it wouldn't have mattered because I still had some mars djinn left over at the end when the boss died to make up for the damage.
Finally, it's best to put a useless djinn you're not gonna use as the first djinn for each character because that's the one the ghoul ball eats. Yea...kinda got owned when it ate my lull in one of my attempts...
Wow.
