Friends can help you practise your intonation by playing with you.
However, practising intonation in unison can be difficult. If instead one person plays an octave underneath, the player on the top line can more clearly hear the note underneath and adjust to that.
This is very useful when studying high passages on the E string.
An example would be Mozart's Violin Concerto in A, !st movement, Bars -, 4 bars before cadenza.
