6/6 of Yuri Burlaka's reconstruction of the Grand Pas classique from "Paquita" for the Bolshoi Ballet. November 17, 2008. Moscow, Russia.

Thanks to my piano reduction of this music & my obsession with balletic archaeology, I have identified the origins of all of these beloved pieces -

1. Variation danced by Svetlana Zakharova . Music by Ludwig Minkus (1881). Variation for Ekaterina Vazem. This is the bonafied original variation for the lead ballerina of the pas.

2. Variation danced by Adrei Uvarov. Music by Riccardo Drigo (1902). This is the male variation written by Drigo for the Ballet Master Achille Coppini's 1902 staging of the ballet "La Source" for the Imperial Ballet. The choreography is by Leonid Lavrovsky.

3. Coda générale (the coda has been restored both choreographically & musically, but I'm pretty sure that Burlaka added in the passages for the children & the danseur's tours à la seconde)

--ENJOY!!

  • where can you get the music for the first variation? I looked on itunes and looked at cds, I really, really need to get the music.

  • @liveforballet02 - one can find it amazon - its available on the CD "La Bayadere & Paquita" with Boris Spassov conducting the Sofia National Opera Orchestra. Look up "Minkus, L.: Bayadere (La) / Paquita [Ballets]" under "mp3 downloads" ... you'll want track 29. I wrote a review of the CD.

  • Thanks ever so much for posting this, and of course thanks to Yuri Burlaka for putting it together. As usual, thanks for the fine notes. It was nice to see Zakharova. She should do this sort of thing more often.

  • Thank you for posting this! I have never seen this variation before - love the port de bras!

  • You know you're in love with ballet when you're watching this, stretching at the same time, pointe shoe sewing stuff on the table, when you're supposed to be doing math. :,)

  • not so impressive uvarov....

  • @fishmaster9399 All those variations are interchangeable. I've even seen the male variation here turn up in Giselle Act 1 for Albrecht.

  • Also,I really wanted to thank you for uploading such good quality videos of beautiful classics of ballet, including tons of relevant information and the best dancers around. :] Thank you very much!

  • This is my favorite out of all Paquita dances, variations, anything. <3

  • Is in CD the variation of Uvarov? Pleas solution!!

  • I have a recording of the paquita pas and I always wondered where/what the original lead ballerina variation looked like. I actually hate the version I have because I swear there is something wrong with the violin its all squeaky and off tune and I thought to myself "how can someone choreograph to this??" I think I've seen the male lead dance to that music as well
