Here's the incredible opening number from the mad masterpiece of 1943 THE GANG'S ALL HERE. Number showcases the manic Carmen Miranda and features the sedate Alice Faye as a member of the 100+ chorus. What price coffee? Don't try to get a piece of butter! This is just a taste of what's to come at the Club New Yorker.

  • Carmen lights up the screen no matter who's directing, but it sure is a privilege to see her as part of Busby Berkeley's vision. Wish we'd had more opportunity to see her put on film by that caliber of filmmaker.

  • im 23, and my mom would watch this movie all the time when i was about 6. my 23rd bday just passed in the beginning of December and i asked my boyfriend to sit and watch this movie with me cause i own it on dvd. he hates musicals! but he absolutely loved this movie i watch it once a week! i was differently born in the wrong time lol

  • WTF is this? Is it brilliant or absolutely awful? I can't make up my mind.

  • Fantastic subversion of expectations - usually Busby's routines start in the real world and move into pure fantasy before abruptly coming back; this is the only one I've seen that instead goes from surreal to real. Also, the lighted face in a dark void is reminiscent of "Lullaby of Broadway". The color here is a bit garish, though.

  • Amazing yet somewhat garish technicolor that jumps off the screen with you...such clubs would need a soundstage to fill the space...the wonderful Charlotte Greenwood is in this movie too!

  • ...one continuous shot at the club...amazing. Boy those 40's studio contract dolls were cute.

  • I'm pretty-certain that I spotted young June Haver as one of the girls' who's seated, "picking up the melody" from Ms. Miranda. She was then going to Beverly Hills High, which was right around the corner from Fox(still is). I know this because my mother, also going to Beverly at the time (but a year or two under her) knew June, and said everyone was so happy for her when she got a contract with the studio, where she would remain thru the rest of the decade. R.J.

  • Starting at 3:45, the rest of the number is all one uninterrupted take.

  • I'd like to hear an informed discussion on the connection between films of this era, including those from Disney, and the experimentation with acid. This isn't basic imagination. If you like this number, you should see the entire film. It's one of the best of its era and genre.

  • I agree.. the charming and very talented Ms.Faye was expecting a child when much of the film was shot.. so they hid her midriff with large muffs and decorated appliques. Carmen was the highest paid entertainer for 3 years in a row.
