I stand corrected that is De la Pena. google Alamo Diaries and you should find something with him. By the way according to the site I just visited the Americans are now apparently convinced the diary is real.

He began Marching but had not reached the Alamo when Texas declared Independence. He could have easily put down the Texans but his family honor was at stake so he stayed committed to the Alamo. Those thirteen days allowed the Texans to build an army which defeated the Mexicans at San Jacinto. By the way look up the De La Pina diaries makes for some interesting reading. Mexicans say they are authenticate while the Americans feel they are not. each side has their own valid points.

I was always taught that the Texas war for Independence was over taxes. The Mexican Constitution of 1824 allowed Americans to settle Texas and develop it tax free but that changed when Santa Anna came to power. If the Americans did not pay their backtaxes he was pulling all military protection from the area. His troops left a Cannon which the Texans told him "Come and get It". He sent in a unit led by his brother in law who lost the first battle of the Alamo. (more)
