For more information on the Ontario School Resource Officer Training Manual and Certification Course contact OPC Instructor Rob MacNeil, OPP Youth Issues Coordinator Robyn MacEchern

The manual is available on the Ontario Police College website:

http://opconline.ca

The School Resource Officer Program is an effective policing tool in safeguarding Ontario's Youth, addressing issues of Prevention, Intervention and Enforcement of Youth crime and victimization.

In September 2006 a working group consisting of Federal, Provincial and Municipal Police Service and Ministry representatives formed to build resources and skills training for officers working with youth.

In October 2007 the Ontario School Resource Officer Manual was distributed to all Police Services by the Ontario Police College. The manual consists of 17 modules addressing specific policing issues relating to youth and a supporting resource guide. The modules were developed by civilian and policing experts across Ontario.

The manual was reviewed and is supported by the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police Youth Committee.

The working group continues to maintain and continue to develop education resources and build the credibility and effectiveness of School Resource Officers. Training is being planned for the summer of 2008. By providing officers working with youth the resources, education and training Ontario Police Services are able to realize the best results in their efforts to build healthy youth, healthy communities.
