When I first set up my tank my fish was fine, but a week or two my biggest gold fish started to get black marks on his fines and face. I looked ever where for an answer but could not find one. I tested the water and the ammonia was a little high but not that bad. In the long run it was ammonia that was burning my fish. I treated my tank by removing 50% water and re-adding fresh water every other day and adding a ammonia neutralizer from Aqueon did the trick! My fish are happy and healthy and so is the water. Anyways this is what it will look like on a fish that has ammonia burns.

  • Um. We had one fish that was entirely gold and one that was white and gold. The gold one started turning black some what a lot and the white one just a little. I too asked a Petsmart employee and she didnt have a clue, but they also had a fish or two that were solid black. So doing some research on the internet I found a site called "Goldfish Connection" and they say that there are two reasons for goldfish to change colors....1) genetics and 2) its a sign of healing.

  • @StoutTina true but in this cause it was ammonia, when I tested the water it was proof enough. Once I cleared the problem the burns went away!

  • my fish is constantly swimming at the top of the tank is this sings of ammonia? please help me idk what to do :( i dont want him to die he's my baby.

  • @BRISARELLY

If your fish is always gulping for air then there is not enough air flow in the water. It would be like he is sticking his noise out of the water and looks like he is eating it. Im not sure what type of fish you have but some fish like to stay towards the top and others in the middle and some at the bottom. I dont think it is a sing of ammonia but if you feel it is go and take your fish tank to a pet store and they can test it for free.

  • oh. my fish has this too, how do you treat it? hope ur fish is ok x

  • I treated my tank by removing 50% water and re-adding fresh water every other day and adding a ammonia neutralizer from Aqueon did the trick! also adding AquaSafe Water Conditioner for Goldfish to each treatment as well my fish was fine after a month and lived :)

  • Another site says "Blackened skin from ammonia burn is actually a good sign. It means the ammonia has dropped back to a safe level, and the fish’s skin has started to heal. So to say that the black is burn spots from ammonia is wrong. Its actually healing spots from where the fish was burned by the ammonia. The black spots/patches were gone w/in the week on our fish.. :)

  • I found out how to treat this the hard way after many failed attempts... my fish are still alive! but after alot of dedication...i can safely say it is esier looking after and maintaing my dog than it is my goldfish :p

  • @BRISARELLY goldfish die, very readilly fish are usually not worth while pets uless you are willing to dedicate time, money, space, and time to study fish you want to buy.

  • the black is a SCAB from ammonia burns. Scabs= healing. water changes and perhaps medicated food help! :)

  • Oh, and lots of water conditioner. The clerk at Petsmart said you can never use enough.

  • I was instructed to do 10% water changes daily to remove the ammonia and nitrites, and use StressZyme to speed up the cycling process.

  • I was trying to figure out what was wrong with my new goldfish. One goldfish was getting these same dark marks around his face and fins. I even asked a Petsmart clerk, and she didn't know what it was. I thought at first it was an infection, but then after a little online research of my own, I realized it was ammonia burn. My readings were also high because my tank is new and is currently cycling. I hope it resolves itself soon. I feel bad for my fish right now.

  • sounds painful..."ammonia burning the fish." ow...but glad they r ok now!
