Kindness of Others 10 minute video I shot in Hot Springs Arkansas Oct Nov Dec 22009 for the local film shorts festival. http://www.elitevideo.com I used over 20 camera/story techniques to keep the viewers interest. See if you can find them. Such as
Action toward the camera, walk in while zooming back. Inside (the mailbox) shot,) Shifting from the expected (rv shot) , Ground level shots, Standing in place (20 minutes)and speeding up in editing, backlit sunset shot on subject, Hour of golden light, Overhead tilt down shot., change up at end of scene technique, pop into frame shot and seamless cut shot (dumpster). sign at two locations transition, reflection shots, Linking shot, Kids in the background of scene, creating a urgency to move conversation, dialog while doing something (screwdriver/Yandi shot), sound effects shot, low depth of field shot, up the body shot, walk out of frame shot etc.
I did it in 90 days in spare time, mainly when Lisa was available, Shot out of sequence based on a rough outline, scene outlines and lots of notes.
During the shooting to run up to Cleveland Clinic for a week in the hospital first and another round of chemo and high dose steriods twice for a flare of Wegners Granulomatosis. I had to do something to keep my mind of the side effects. In retrospect, overdid it at times but had fun. The deadline for entry was this week. Note: Borrowed/modified idea from Almost famous (rv pole hit scene, and no crying phrase from Leauge of their Own.

I used a consumer HF-11 Canon. but any Canon HD cam over $600 yeilds the same image quality. Note the ballon never moved but the camera did for fake action. No color correction, Edited in Sony Vegas. Everyone in movie were first time actors but wrote characters around their personality. The two boysin the karaoke studios are my sons Dan and Ben. Thanks so much to Lisa and the others in the credits for all her effort. Yandi is my neighbor and Cory is the Detail shop right down the street. Every location was within 2.5 miles of my house including zak and Cheryl at the Brauhouse restaurant after a performance shot their parts in 10 minutes after their gig.. I tried to frame the shots as if they were photographers. Note that the action moves more than the camera does much of the time.
10 minutes film length was the festival maximun, the movie is really 15 minutes, but the long version is not editted yet, In the next few months I will post that.
Ask me questions, Ill be happy to answer.

  • I am not sure if it was intended by the editor, however, I personally feel as though this entire video could have looked much better with color correction and crushing the blacks.

Not focusing on that, I enjoyed it!

  • Good tip, Perhaps I will back and do that. Thanks for the tip.

  • Absolutely Out Standing...Great Concept and Fascinating Delivery... Our World would

be a Wonderful Place If her mind set caught on...Thank You... :)(:

  • I just saw your post, Thanks so much for the nice words.

  • Great job! And I hope all is well with your health. Some of it's pretty funny, and the two black dudes and Master Yondi are awesome. May I ask why you went with the cam mic instead of the shotty, since you had one?

  • Thanks for the nice words. I wanted to be able to show people that a movie can be made, with just a camcorder and without extra gear. Mics, lights reflectors. Looking back I should have used a shotgun mic throughout. But I was curious if I could do it too. I will tell the guys you enjoyed their work. I see them every few days still since they live or work closeby - Thanks again - John
